When Piper returned, Nick took her straight to Grady’s lab. No hardship for Nick at all. If he had to work in any other capacity at the lab other than in cybercrimes, he would take Grady’s job in a heartbeat. After all, other than delving into computers and their secrets, what could be cooler than playing with weapons all day?

She stopped in the doorway and peered around the space, her eyes wide. Nick came down here all the time and was used to seeing Grady’s top-notch ballistics equipment, so Nick tried to see everything through her eyes. He took a long look at the display cases in the front room holding different firearms and ammunition neatly labeled with their details.

“This is something else.” She stared in awe. “I’ve never seen so many weapons or such a variety of ammunition in one place. It’s so cool.”

“If it exists, Grady has it.” Nick grinned at her. “Maybe we could go to the range together sometime.”

“Yeah, sure,” she said but didn’t sound convinced that it was a good idea.

“Wait until you see what he has in the back room.” Nick pointed at the doorway to the space that held worktables with vises and comparison microscopes. Grady used the tools to compare bullets recovered at crime scenes to ones he fired from recovered weapons into the large stainless steel bullet recovery containment system with a water bath on the back wall. Or compare a bullet’s rifling marks, lands, and grooves to a gun barrel to determine if a particular weapon fired the bullet.

Piper let out a long sigh. “I love the smell of spent smokeless gunpowder.”

“Ah, a woman after my own heart.” Nick pretended to faint, but he liked that she knew the type of gunpowder used in bullets these days. She might be in law enforcement, but experience told him that few officers thought about the materials that went into their ammunitions.

She laughed and walked over to Grady, who had his eyes pressed against one of the microscopes. “I could totally spend some time here, Grady.”

He raised his head and smiled. “You sound like most law enforcement officers who visit my lab.”

“Oddly enough,” Nick said and mocked offense, “I don’t get the same reaction.”

“I’m pretty sure I was dutifully impressed by your lab.” Piper wrinkled her nose at him.

“Yeah, you were, and it was kind of hot.” Nick grinned at her and locked gazes.

Piper’s eyes flashed open. He loved how he could catch her off guard. Loved looking at the surprise in her eyes. Loved looking at her. Period.

“Did you two come down here to flirt with each other or…?” Grady fixed a pointed stare on them.

Piper blushed a delicious strawberry red. Nick took pity on her, didn’t mention it, and shifted his focus to Grady.

“You have ballistics for us,” she said in her confident agent voice, proving she could recover quickly.

“I haven’t finished evaluating all the slugs, but I thought you’d want to know right away what I discovered.” Grady leaned back and grabbed a stapled pack of papers to hand to Piper.
